Brook Klausing

  • Born and raised in Kentucky, ol’ blue eyes, Brook moved to NYC about the same time as I did which, without giving our ages away, was around the time cell phones were just phones and Myspace was cool!  We met on the set of a music video, he was an extra and I was styling it.  At one point I was also in the video, but found out later my take had hit the cutting room floor, but that’s a whole other story you can take up with my therapist!  I thought he was cute but cocky and pretty much dismissed him with one eye roll! Cut to a few years later, circa around the time Face Book was all the rage, Myspace was an ancient relic and people hadn’t yet fallen down the narcissistic delusional well of #ImusttelleveryonewhatIthinkevery2seconds of Twitter. (Maybe they had, I’m just slower, than most, to catch on.)  Fate this time had us bumping into each other at a fashion show!  Both a little bit more beat up after some hard living, fun filled years in New York, we bonded over the free wine and laughed at the silly hats the poor beautiful models had to wear!   A big kid at heart, Brook is happiest jumping off rocks into lakes or exploring flea markets for the perfect piece of furniture.  However, as boss of “Brook Landscapes” the world often demands he be an adult and over the years he has grown to not only become one of the most talented and successful landscape designers in New York City, with some of the chicest clients in the business, but has also caught the eagle eyes of various casting agents, designers and photographers.  He is, basically, the face of J.Crew and I’ve lost count of how many “real people” ads ‘n articles he has been featured in.  One such article came to the attention of probably the biggest producer in reality TV and although I’m not at liberty to say too much, I think it would be ok to say that all ya’ll sitting rooms might one day soon be invaded by this here all American, fella’s padlock your girlfriend’s panties, good looking southern boy!  In this image driven world, where all things beautiful and famous seem to be celebrated above everything else and you are only as relevant as the amount of likes your last #checkitoutmylifeiswaybetterthanyours Instagram, Brook is looking like the man who might finally, hopefully, one day topple the reigning Kardashian queen from her reality TV throne…#aboutbloodytime.

  • Who is Brook Klausing?
A hopeless romantic, suffering from Peter Pan syndrome, with a furious drive to create.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A 16 year old with a license, girlfriend and camping store? I never planned too far past my 8 year old Lego architect phase.

How did you get to be where you are?
“Started from the bottom now we here.”  I’m a “roll your sleeves up” kinda guy,  build off the basics, get involved and love what you do!

  • If you could go back in time and give your 16 year old self some advice what would it be?
Can I do that to my future self also?   Be patient, be aware, have fun and trust the rest will work out.

If the wardrobe in your bedroom would lead you to another world what would your Narnia look like?
A world where everyone’s guard is down and you can see people’s souls/hearts rather than the shells we wear.  Look ‘Em in the eye.

  • By day you are…. ?  By night you are….?
By day I run a design build firm specializing in gardens.  I’ve been working on some other media projects lately jumping out of my comfort zone.  By night I’m a goof ball.

What was one of your favorite past projects?
I really like my clients so it’s more about the people we work with.  It’s such a blur now.

  • What are you working on now and what do you dream of happening in the future?
We have an amazing project board happening now.   I’m super stoked we are designing an Eco camp ground with tree houses for Bonnaroo Festival.  We also have an amazing modern PH on Wall Street in development.

What song do you love that you keep secret ’cause it’s too embarrassing to say publicly you like it?
Beyoncé, “If I were a girl?”

  • Which version of “Between the Bars” do you prefer, Elliot Smith or Madonnas cover she sang on stage at the premiere on stage as a part of Secret Project Revolution  short film in New York?
Can’t download the Madonna version right now.  Maybe Elliot?

Are you a morning person or night person?
I’m a night person that still has to get up early.

  • Any advice for peeps just starting out?
Do what you love, don’t question what you love.

Is there a quote or mantra you live by?
Quality has no fear of time.

  • What do you want to be when you grow up?
I don’t want it to be written.  I want it to be bigger and better than I can imagine.  I want to enjoy the ride.
